Comparison of Activated Carbon Testing Indicators: How to Assess Quality

Assessing the quality of activated carbon is not complicated. The key lies in comparing a few sets of critical testing indicators.

By simply understanding these specific metrics, you can easily avoid inferior products and select activated carbon that is truly efficient and stable.

1. Assessing Adsorption Capacity: Iodine Value and Methylene Blue Value

Assessing Adsorption Capacity: Iodine Value and Methylene Blue Value

Iodine Adsorption Value: Reflects the capacity to adsorb small molecules, the higher the value, the stronger the adsorption.

High-quality carbon typically measures ≥900 mg/g, whereas lower-grade carbon often falls below 700 mg/g.

Methylene Blue Value: Indicates decolorization capability, utilized in water treatment and food decolorization applications.

High-quality carbon measures ≥10 mL, while standard carbon measures only 6–8 mL.

2. Assessing Durability: Strength

Mechanical strength determines whether activated carbon is abrasion-resistant and resistant to crumbling.

High-quality granular carbon: ≥95%

Inferior carbon: <90%, prone to pulverization, equipment clogging, and rapid attrition.

3. Assessing Purity: Ash Content

Ash content consists of inorganic impurities, the lower the ash content, the purer the material.

High-quality coconut shell / wood-based activated carbon: Ash content < 10%

Ordinary coal-based activated carbon: Ash content 15%–25%

Excessively high ash content directly impairs adsorption performance.

4. Key Indicator for Waste Gas Treatment: CTC (Carbon Tetrachloride Adsorption Rate)

CTC is a mandatory metric for applications involving VOCs, paint spray exhaust, odor removal, and similar scenarios.

High-Quality Waste Gas Carbon: ≥60%

Standard Carbon: Only 40%–50%—representing a significant shortfall in adsorption capacity.

The quality of activated carbon cannot be discerned by the naked eye; however, a comparison of key metrics makes the difference immediately apparent.

By cross-referencing the aforementioned key data points during the purchasing process, you can avoid inferior products and select activated carbon that is truly efficient, durable, and cost-effective.
