It can be impregnated with KOH, NaOH, K₂CO₃, KI, CuO, MgO, KMnO₄ for acidic gas removal (e.g., H₂S), or with sulfur, sulfuric acid, phosphoric acid for alkaline gas removal (e.g., ammonia), as well as mercuric chloride or sulfur for mercury removal.
